...not for gold buyers, but for gold sellers. Tesco now offers cash-for-gold bags in 15 of its stores. Seeing a competitive advantage in paying a relatively high price, the store has guaranteed to pay £7.81 per gram of 9K gold (equal to about US$1000 per ounce of the pure stuff.)
Given the complaints about the low prices paid by the established infomercial gold-buyers, it wasn't that surprising to see outside competition venture in. Except for those vending machines, and offering gold bars at Harrod's, I haven't seen any retailer drive in to sell gold to the general public. If (say) Wal-Mart began selling 1 g bars in its stores, that would be an eye-opener. It's more likely that Wal-Mart would copy Tesco.
