U.S. December Job Openings Slump

Job openings for December shrunk 100,000 to 3.1 million in December, according to the Labour Department. Private job openings shrunk far more than others, to 2.6 million from 2.9. Given the corresponding unemployment figures, there's about five potential holders for each opening.

The gold market liked the announcement, ticking up four dollars an ounce and edging to a new daily high of $1,367.60 after the news was released. Most of that gain was erased shortly afterwards.
